About Us

Rolling Tides Construction project

How it started

More than 14 years ago, Rolling Tides Construction was founded on Vancouver Island by Matt and Lea, with Matt working in the field and Lea supporting the business behind the scenes. The company began with military carpentry contracts and residential renovations, built by a small crew focused on doing the work right.

Project by project and relationship by relationship, Rolling Tides grew into a trusted builder of residential, multi-unit, and commercial projects across the Island, guided by craftsmanship, integrity, and a lasting commitment to the communities it serves.

FOUNDERS

Meet the Founders
behind Rolling Tides

Rolling Tides Construction Inc. was founded on a shared commitment to craftsmanship, people, and long-term vision.

More than 20 years into his entrepreneurial journey, founder Matt Rasmussen brings the same ambition, drive, and passion to the business as he did on day one. A natural team builder and culture crafter, Matt approaches construction the same way he approaches life outside of work — bringing people together around a common goal and building something meaningful through trust and collaboration.

Matt began his apprenticeship with Farmer Construction in his teens and is a Red Seal Carpenter, spending years on the tools in the residential sector. In the early days of Rolling Tides, he was deeply hands-on in every aspect of the work. While that foundation shaped how the company operates, his vision extended beyond individual projects — toward strong process, leadership, and long-term impact.

That broader vision is where Lea Hazenboom has played a critical role. As a co-founder and early integrator of the business, Lea wore nearly every hat required to build Rolling Tides from the ground up — from administration, bookkeeping, and HR to working in the field as a labourer. Her deep understanding of the business formed the operational backbone that allowed the company to grow with intention.

While Rolling Tides began as a founder-led operation, it has since grown into a company supported by a dedicated team who carry these values forward. Today, Matt and Lea remain focused on leadership, direction, and stewardship — ensuring the same standards, culture, and commitment that shaped the early years continue to guide the company as it evolves.

More Than the Build

For us, construction has never just been about what we build — it’s about the impact we have along the way.

Impact is a core belief at Rolling Tides. It shows up in the small things, like coaching our kids’ sports teams, and in the big things, like shaping a company that people are proud to be part of. We believe impact is measured not only by results, but by how people feel during the process and long after it’s done.

When we talk about building a great company, we’re talking about people — our clients, our team, and our community. Taking care of great clients matters, but taking care of great team members matters just as much. We’re committed to creating a place where people don’t just come to work, but come to grow.

A place where they leave not only compensated, but better educated, more confident, and further along in their professional development. A place they see as a career, not just a job. And if their path eventually takes them elsewhere, we want them to know the door is always open.

We also recognize the privilege of the position we’re in. People don’t exist only as clients or employees — they live in our communities. Through initiatives like Ruth’s Ice Bucket Challenge and 10K for Kindness, we value the opportunity to give back and to support causes that matter locally.

At the end of the day, people are the end users of everything we build. Homes, cottages, community spaces — these aren’t just projects. They’re places where life happens.

What drives us

That’s what drives us.

That’s what makes it more than the build.
